Santa Monica Hosts Series of Community Events for National Water Safety Month

The month-long campaign, which runs throughout May, includes hands-on demonstrations, CPR training, lifeguard outreach and family-friendly activities.

Santa Monica Community Aquatics is marking National Water Safety Month with a series of free public events aimed at preventing drownings and promoting water safety education.

The month-long campaign, which runs throughout May, includes hands-on demonstrations, CPR training, lifeguard outreach and family-friendly activities. National Water Safety Month is organized by groups including the American Red Cross and the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance.

Scheduled events include:

– A Fire Service Day open house on May 9 at Fire Station 1, featuring Hands-Only CPR demonstrations, firehouse tours and an opportunity to meet local lifeguards and firefighters.
– Free Hands-Only CPR training on May 16 at the Santa Monica Swim Center Sun Deck.
– The Santa Monica Sharks Invitational Swim Meet on May 17, with a water safety photo booth and pledge station.
– Study break sessions with lifeguards at the Main Library on May 19, 20 and 21, offering information on aquatics careers, junior lifeguard programs and water safety.
– Open swim sessions with water safety activities at the Annenberg Community Beach House on May 24 and 25.
– An inaugural sandcastle competition and ocean safety event on May 31 at Santa Monica State Beach Lifeguard Tower 4, hosted with Los Angeles County Lifeguards. Activities will include rip current awareness training and the “Stingray Shuffle.”

Participants are encouraged to take the “Safe Swimmer” pledge, which includes commitments to never swim alone, obey pool rules and jump in feet first.
