Health officials said the warnings were prompted by recent testing showing bacteria levels above state standards.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health issued ocean water use warnings Friday for several beaches in Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades and Malibu after water samples detected elevated bacteria levels exceeding state health standards.

The agency advised the public to avoid swimming, surfing and playing in ocean water near the affected areas because of an increased risk of illness.

Warnings were issued for waters near the storm drain at Will Rogers State Beach, extending 100 yards in both directions from Tower 5.

A separate warning was issued for waters surrounding Malibu Lagoon at Surfrider Beach, extending 100 yards up and down the coast from the public restrooms.

In Santa Monica, officials warned against ocean water use within 100 yards of the Santa Monica Pier.

Health officials said the warnings were prompted by recent testing showing bacteria levels above state standards.

The department also announced that previous warnings for waters near Tunas Canyon at Las Tunas County Beach and Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro had been lifted after follow-up testing found water quality within acceptable state limits.
