Samohi’s Skaggs Earns High Rating:

Santa Monica High pitcher Tyler Skaggs continued a summer of showcasing his skills by playing in the 22nd annual Area Code Games at Blair Field in Long Beach.

When the event ended, Skaggs made a list of the top 10 pitchers and also was named to the All-Area Code team. He pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers Blues, who reached the championship game before losing.

Skaggs, a senior at Samohi, is on the radar of major league organizations as they prepare for the June, 2009 draft. There were 300 scouts at the Area Code Games.

Skaggs’ fastball was clocked at 89 mph. With growth and increased strength, the slender 6-foot-4-inch lefthander could rise higher in the draft than where he’s projected now – a choice in the first three rounds.
