Heal the Bay held their 18th annual Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, September 20. The Los Angeles countywide effort at 71 sites brought out more than 12,000 volunteers and cleaned up 181,000 pounds of debris and recyclables from county watersheds. HTB hosted seven sites in Santa Monica, totaling 1649 volunteers who cleaned up 1267.5 pounds of garbage and an additional 279.5 pounds of recyclables, according to their Communications Manager Jessica Belsky. Styrofoam and cigarette butts continue to be the most commonly found items.
