Brentwood Suffers First Loss:

Coach Patrick Brown had a message for his Brentwood football team after it absorbed its first loss of the season Friday night, September 27.

“You can’t make mistakes against a good team and expect to win,” he said.

Brentwood traveled to St. Bernard High in Playa del Rey and took a 14-7 halftime lead but finished with three fumbles, an interception and a 34-21 setback.

Brentwood had begun the season with wins over St. Anthony and Rio Hondo Prep. But St. Bernard’s athletic players caused them problems.

“I doubt that we’ll play a more athletic team unril the playoffs,” said Brown.

Jared Shaw, St. Bernard’s outstanding receiver, was instrumental as he caught a 17-yard touchdown pass.

But Brentwood showed it could compete against a non-league opponent which plays in a higher division.

The game was tied at 7 nearing intermission when Eagles quarterback Josh Amster raced 70 yards to a touchdown on a draw play.

That was before Brentwood’s errors contributed to the outcome.

Brown is hoping to develop a running game before Alpha League play begins.

Brentwood will have a home non-league game on Saturday, October 4 against Pasadena Poly. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
