Bicycle Burglar.Thursday, May 14, 12:44 a.m. Officers of The Santa Monica Police Department received a report from a witness, at the 900 block of 3rd Street, that they (the witness) had observed a person enter a carport on foot, but leave riding a bicycle. Now, short of any David Blaine style trickery, it was clear to the witness that the law of probabilities would suggest that a bicycle theft had just taken place. The attending officers shared this opinion, and searched for this bicycle thief. They found the scoundrel in the 1400 block of 4th Street and arrested him, and later booked him for burglary. They also located the owner of said bicycle, and presumably returned it to them.A Woman of the Evening.Friday, May 15, 1:10 a.m. An officer was patrolling around the area of the 2000 block of Lincoln Boulevard. Now, anyone with local knowledge of Lincoln Boulevard will know that there are certain stretches of this mainly utilitarian thoroughfare that have been the preferred location for “women of the evening” to ply their trade, namely, prostitution. The officer patrolling the above area noticed a female, whom, through previous interactions with the police, was recognized as being someone who was most probably a prostitute (1:10 in the morning, unlikely to be shopping for carpet cleaner, one suspects). The officer spoke with this suspected prostitute (with her consent), and during the course of the conversation discovered that yes, she indeed, was most probably, a prostitute. She was arrested and later booked for loitering for the purpose of prostitution. The Shirt Off His Back.Saturday, May 16, 6:16 p.m. Officers sped to the 300 block of Pico Boulevard in response to a robbery report. When they arrived they exited their vehicle and met the male victim who explained that he was beginning the process of filling his vehicle’s gas tank with gasoline when an assailant had grabbed a $20 bill that he was inserting into the automatic payment machine (you know, the ones that always spit the note back out a few times) and in doing so had ripped it in half. The victim had demanded the half a note back and in response to this request, the suspect had punched the victim several times, in the face, with a closed fist (that is very serious). During this assault the victim had fallen to the ground and in doing so had pulled the shirt off the back of this rascal. The suspect had fled the location, but the police, using their skills, located him, hiding in, of all places, a dog run in the 200 block of Bay Street. This suspect was put on a short leash by the application of handcuffs and taken to jail where he was later booked for strong-arm robbery.
