Three Lucerne Valley High players were ejected during St. Monica’s 42-0 non-league victory Friday night at St. Bernard High.
“Their players apparently were offended when we tried an onsides kick to start the second half,” said St. Monica coach Larry Muno. “But we did it to protect ourselves.
“On an earlier kickoff one of our players was chop blocked and injured. I didn’t think they displayed very good sportsmanship.”
The ejections then occurred as the Mariners romped to their second victory in four games, the first time since 2005 St. Monica has won two games in a season. Both wins have been shutouts.
With Muno arriving as Coach St. Monica and the roster upgraded in talent St. Monica has thrown the ball frequently and utilities the talents of quarterback Matthew Partyka, who had been a soccer player until this season.
The receiving corps is headed by Daniel White, Jamal Young and Kyle Farber, a transfer from Mira Costa.
And the passing game has succeeded without Sam Holguin, who is out for the season with a broken ankle.
Partyka threw for 300 yards against Lucerne Valley and Farber caught three touchdown passes.
In a rare feat, White returned an interception100 yards for a touchdown for the second time this season.
St. Monica will have a bye this week and will play Salesian at Corsair Field on October 17.
