Final proof, if any were needed, that we have entered a neo-Orwellian age came Sunday with the announcement that the NBC Television network has canceled President Jed Bartlet. When a television network can scrub a president, and not just any president, but a great president, you know that we have crossed the line and are in that limboland in which up us down and black is white and true is false. Given the events of the last several years, the cancellation of President Jed Bartlet is less a surprise than a confirmation that America’s in freefall. Hail and farewell, President Bartlet, you were the best and the brightest since the thousand days of President John F. Kennedy.
