Santa Monica’s Ferris Wheel To Go ‘Dark’ For Earth Hour On Saturday:

The Ferris wheel on the Santa Monica Pier joins international landmarks including the Sydney Opera House and Eiffel Tower at 8:30 p.m. on March 31.

The Ferris wheel on the Santa Monica Pier at Pacific Park is set to go ‘dark’ during Earth Hour 2012 this Saturday, March 31.

The iconic Ferris wheel joins International landmarks including the Sydney Opera House and Eiffel Tower, among many others at 8:30 p.m. local time on March 31.

The one-hour lights-out on the world-famous Ferris wheel will include all lights except for the wheel rim safety lighting.

Earth Hour has grown from a one-city initiative in 2007, to a 5,251 city strong global movement, last year reaching 1.8 billion people in 135 countries across all seven continents, according to the Earth Hour organization.

“Pacific Park looks forward to Earth Hour each year to help raise environmental awareness,” said Jeff Klocke, Director of Marketing and Sales at Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier. “Pacific Park is committed to being a leader in our community and industry for green initiatives. In addition to the world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel, we recently introduced the world’s only wind-powered amusement park game. With these high profile successes, we continue to identify additional greening initiatives throughout the Park.”

The Pacific Wheel is the world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel featuring 160,000 energy-efficient LED lights that present dynamic, custom, computer-generated lighting entertainment each evening. The eco-friendly, enhanced LED lighting provides 75 percent greater energy savings than most Ferris wheel’s traditional incandescent bulbs.
