A suspect was detained Tuesday in connection with the theft of more than 50 laptop computers worth more than $30,000 from a UCLA research library equipment loan room, according to campus police.
The detainee has not been arrested, police reported Tuesday evening.
A man wearing UCLA sweatpants and blue running shoes was caught on surveillance video taking the computers from the equipment loan room of the Charles E. Young Research Library early Saturday morning.
He is thought to be the same person responsible for the burglary of laptops from Ackerman Union on Sept. 28, UCLA Director of Media Relations Phil Hampton said.
In Saturday’s theft, the suspect smashed an east-facing ground level window to gain access to the library building, then smashed the window on a door to the room where laptops are loaned to patrons.
Surveillance video shows the man, who is white and about 5 feet 10 inches tall, rolling a suitcase.
No additional information about the detained suspect would be provided until Wednesday morning, police said.
