The University of Venice has scheduled a symposium on “Venice Self-Government: Strategies and Alternatives,” on Saturday, April 16.
The symposium will focus on the means by which Venice can control development, maintain a mix of incomes and ethnic groups, promote the arts, and remain a unique and vital community.
The symposium will begin with four presentations.
Venice historian and writer Arnold Springer will talk about the City of Venice and secession and annexation movements. Suzanne Thompson’s subject will be neighborhood councils. She was elected president of the Grassroots Venice Neighborhood Council in 2004.
Michael Feinstein, former Santa Monica City Councilman, will propose “Creating a Santa Monica County,” and writer/publisher Bill McNally, aka Sweet William, will examine recent efforts to restore Venice cityhood.
The presentations will be followed by a Q&A session and a general discussion. Neighborhood Council treasurer Jim Smith will moderate.
