Students, parents, and staff within the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District are preparing for the 2013 “Bike It! Walk It!” week that runs May 7 through May 10. The initiative encourages school students and staff to leave the car at home and utilize active modes of transportation.

I just wanted to give my public thanks to the City of Santa Monica for their continued effort to make life safer for all its bicyclists. 14th Street and Ocean Park Blvd. bike lanes have been completed and are very welcome. Where cars park along the curb the bike lane has been made wide enough that, if someone suddenly opening their car door, it won't send you sprawling on the pavement as long as you're riding toward the outside of the bike lane.

The Michigan Avenue Neighborhood Greenway is expected to include facilities such as a neighborhood greenway, bike paths, and shared lane markings.

Santa Monica’s Bike Action Plan (BAP) is barely nine months old, but the wheels of its implementation have already begun to move. One of the handfuls of projects included in the five-year BAP implementation is the Michigan Avenue Neighborhood Greenway, located just east of Santa Monica Beach.

The annual Tour de France bike race in Europe is one of the ultimate tests of strength, endurance, and tenacity. Just completing the race is a life accomplishment for most riders. But recently, scientists who have been studying the effects of biking on the brain and body have found biking can improve brain health as well as having physical benefits.
