Several Westside high school basketball players have received all-CIF recognition. The highest honor went to Brianne Brown of Brentwood, who was named Division 4A Player of the Year. Her coach, Dave Smith, was honored as Division 4 Coach of the Year. The Eagles’ girls had two other honorees. Tami Brown made all-CIF Division 4 first team and Lauren Edwards made second team. Also on the second team was Samantha Grill of Crossroads, who overcame an injury that kept her out most of last season. In the girls’ 5AA division Desiree Davis of New Roads was selected to the first team and a freshman, Lindsey Knox of New Roads, to the second team. In boys’ basketball senior Ben Kussman of Brentwood was selected to the Division 4AA first team. On the second team were junior Andreas Schreiber of Brentwood and senior Mitchel Yoshitake of Crossroads. The Brentwood girls had a 24-7 record, including 8-0 in the Olympic League. The team became Southern California champions with a 51-34 win over Country Day High of La Jolla in the regional tournament. Going on to a game for the state championship Brentwood lost to Piedmont.The Brentwood boys finished 20-9. In the CIF playoffs the Eagles defeated Carpinteria and Rosamond before losing to Serra, 58-55.
