SMC Basketball Players Pick Schools:

Jonathan Smith, a quick, high-scoring 5-9 guard who made all-conference at Santa Monica College last season, has signed a letter-of-intent with Cal State Northridge.

Center Kam-Ron Clay has signed with Chicago State.

SMC Coach Trevor Shickman recalls that he advised Smith to transfer last season because Smith’s academics weren’t good and his shot selection lacked discipline. Instead of leaving, Smith passed three difficult courses in summer school and then became a true point guard with improvement in his passing.

Clay contributed rebounding and defense to the Corsairs but was injured and didn’t play in the latter part of the season. He has resumed workouts.Other SMC sophomores haven’t yet secured scholarships. LeBoise Gladden and Efren Lawrence are candidates for four-year schools and guard Jun Nakanishi has drawn interest from a professional team in Japan.
