Venice Is All Art All the Time: 26th Annual Venice Art Walk Is Sunday

This year’s Venice Art Walk and Auction on Sunday, May 22, will feature self-guided tours of over 60 private working studios and homes of notable Venice artists and private collectors.

In addition, “On the Fringe,” a tour of artists’ studios and architecturally significant houses is scheduled on Saturday,  May 21, and, in observance of the 100th anniversary of Venice, a specially curated exhibition, “Bridges and Beyond,” focusing on the Venice canals, will be included.

Artist and sculptor Robert Graham, who has lived and worked in Venice Beach for many years, has contributed an image for the event’s t-shirt, and Chicano artist Patssi Valdez’s “The Dancing Tables” is featured on the 2005 Venice Art Walk poster.

Over 400 original works of art donated by emerging and established artists from throughout the Los Angeles area will be auctioned off at the Art Walk Art Auction, which is held in conjunction with the self-guided tours. The diverse selection of works includes sculpture, paintings, photography and original animation cells and cartoons.

The Art Walk and Auction food faire will offer very artistic cuisine from popular Westside Los Angeles restaurants.  The afternoon will also include an al fresco cocktail garden and live jazz performances, and a “deals and steals” silent auction will feature over 200 items including resort getaways and Hollywood Bowl box seats.

In addition, a children’s arts area will offer hands-on activity and entertainment.

For a quarter-century, the Venice Art Walk & Auction has raised funds for the Venice Family Clinic, the largest free clinic in the United States, which provides medical care to uninsured individuals and families in Los Angeles County who would otherwise have no access to health care.

Sunday’s Art Walk & Auction will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Headquarters for the weekend is Westminster School at 1010 Abbot Kinney Boulevard. Tours begin and end there and the auction, food faire and children’s arts are held there.

Tickets for the Venice Art Walk studio tour are $50 per person.  Admission to the food faire and the “Bridges and Beyond” outdoor exhibit is free. All proceeds from the ticket sales as well as the art auction, silent auction and food and beverage sales benefit  the clinic.

“On the Fringe,” a self-driving art and architecture tour on   Saturday, May 21, from noon to 4 p.m. is a prelude to the traditional Sunday Art Wakk.

It will showcase studios of notable artists and architecturally distinctive homes “on the fringe” of the Venice Art Walk area featured on Sunday. Artists and docents will be present at all nine sites.

The Venice canals’ tour will feature houses designed by architects Steven Ehrlich, Glen Irani, Michele Saee and Vaughan Trammell.

Switch Studios, a creative workspace and digital cinema facility created from a former corner market, will also be on the tour.

The Victoria Avenue artist studios tour will feature studios of Robert Berger, architectural and travel photographer;  Ron Griffin, mixed media paintings, representations of juxtaposed found paper objects; Jeremy Kidd, mixed media painting, altered environments, installations; Susan Narduli, installation artist and architect; and Marischa Slusarski, figurative painting and collaborative photography.

As an added attraction, “On the Fringe” tour participants will tour “Bridges and beyond,” a special Venice Art Walk exhibit that features works by eight Los Angeles area artists who have created site-specific installations for the walkways and bridges along the canals in observance of the 100th anniversary of Venice.

A map of tour locations will be provided via mail to advance ticket buyers.  Day-of-tour ticket buyers can purchase tickets and pick up maps at Westminster School.

Tickets for “On the Fringe” Tour are $75 per person. Ticket holders may also attend a special art auction preview at the school at the conclusion of the tour.

For $100 per person, a Venice Art Walk Weekend Package can be purchased, providing admission to the “On the Fringe” tour and Venice Art Walk auction preview on May 21 and the Venice Art Walk on May 22.
