Lawyers Guild to Honor Midnight Special:

The Lawyers Guild will pay tribute to the now-shuttered Midnight Special Bookstore of Santa Monica and its owner Margie Ghiz at its annual dinner and fund-raiser on Sunday, June 26.

The Lawyers Guild is a 68-year old human rights bar association dedicated to the proposition that human rights are more sacred than property interests, and regularly defends workers and political activists in the civil rights, women’s rights, immigrants rights, and peace movements.

Santa Monica attorney Carol Sobel is president of the Guild.

It is honoring Ghiz and the bookstore, which was a fixture in Santa Monica for decades, for its devotion to the causes of peace and social justice. According to a Guild spokesperson, “Their contribution … simply cannot be over- stated.”

In addition to stocking hard-to-find, often controversial books, the bookstore took positions on the issues of the day and provided a place for activists and scholars to hold discussions, forums, screenings and programs.

Midnight Special Bookstore was located for many years on what was the Third Street Mall and became the Third Street Promenade. Forced out by escalating rents a couple of years ago, it moved to Second Street, but was ultimately done in by City red tape. The dinner will be held at the Pasadena Hilton Hotel, 168 South Los Robles Avenue.
