Seminar for Would-Be Publishers Slated:

826LA will hold a seminar for aspiring writers, “Starting and Running Your Own Press,” featuring founders, editors, and marketing directors from some of the country’s leading small independent presses, on Sunday, August 28, from 6-9 p.m.

Panelists will include Pilar Perez, now with McSweeney’s, previously with Smart Art Press and Perceval Press, Matthew Greenfield of Cloverfield Press, Dan Cullinane of Alyson Books, Baby Tatoo’s Bob Self, and Jay Brida and Jeffrey Dinsmore, both of Contemporary Press.

They will discuss the nuts and bolts of starting and running a successful publishing company. Each of them has a unique background in the business.

According to an 826LA spokesperson, “No details will be spared, and all pertinent secrets shall be revealed.”

People who want to attend should reserve a spot by emailing rsvp@826la.com. All proceeds benefit 826LA, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write, based on the belief that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

To that end, it provides free drop-in tutoring, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications.826LA is located in the SPARC Building, 685 Venice Boulevard in Venice.
