Brentwood Wins

Brentwood opened its football season last Friday with a 43-6 non-league win over Animo High of Inglewood. Brentwood will travel to Mojave High Friday night.

Malibu Loses

Malibu High School lost its opening football game, 35-6, to Rio Hondo Prep of Arcadia Saturday.

The defeat spoiled the head coaching debut of Ray Humphrey, who was a 12-year assistant at Santa Monica High.

Despite the defeat, Humphrey praised quarterback Bennett Sherman, a senior making his football debut after starring in water polo the last three years.

“He was poised throughout the game and threw a touchdown pass to (running back) Miles Edmond,’’ said the coach.

This weekend Malibu will play at Ribet Academy.

Losman Starts Fast

Former Venice high star J.P. Losman made his debut as a starting quarterback in the National Football League Sunday, completing 17 of 28 passes for 170 yards in Buffalo’s 22-7 win over Houston. He threw one touchdown pass and had no interceptions.

Girls Volleyball

The season began for St. Monica in a 3-0 non-league victory over Serra.

Cross Country

The New Roads girls will participate in the Westside League meet Tuesday. The meet is being hosted by Rolling Hills Prep and will begin at 4 p.m.

Water PoloSanta Monica College defeated El Camino, 8-6, in the Ventura Tournament.
