Westside Food Bank: Will Walk for Food: 15th annual 5K is Sunday

The Westside Food Bank will hold its fifteenth annual 5K Hunger Walk on Sunday, October 23.

The focus of this year’s walk is the issue of local youth hunger, and it will take place at Santa Monica High School at 601 Pico Boulevard.

Pre-walk festivities and registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Science Quad, with the walk-a-thon beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Hot Dog on a Stick will provide lunch for the walkers.

All the proceeds of the walk will benefit the Westside Food Bank which provides food to more than 65 local social service agencies.

Each month, it provides food for over 50,000 people, nearly half of whom are children. Escalating costs for housing, health care, energy, and child care have forced record numbers of local people to seek food assistance.

According to Food Bank officials, the need for food assistance locally is now rising five times faster than the level of food distribution.Individuals, schools and organizations are invited to participate in the Walk.
