St. Monica is the first Westside school to begin its league baseball season, and the Mariners have won the first two games.The Mariners defeated St. Paul last week, 5-4, then defeated St. Bernard, 6-4 in Del Rey League play.St.`Monica had lost to St. Paul in an earlier meeting that didn’t count in the league standings. Overall, St. Monica has a 3-3 record.Santa Monica came back from a 12-1 loss to Ventura by shutting out LA Poly, 6-0. The Vikings are 3-2.Kevin Gonzalez is batting .357 and Diego Valdez .333. Joe McGrew has pitched 18 innings and has a 3-0 record.Crossroads outslugged Viewpoint, 15-7, improving its record to 3-1.Brentwood is undefeated at 4-0, including a 15-1 win over New Roads followed by a 13-7 conquest of Windward.New Roads came back with two victories. The Jaguars defeated Discovery Prep, 16-7 and Chadwick, 13-5.Malibu lost its Frontier League opener to Oaks Christian, 10-0, and is 2-3 overall.In the LA City Section, Palisades had a 7-2 win over Hawthorne and a 10-4 win over Carson and now has a 4-2 record. But Venice remained winless, falling to 0-5 with a 14-9 loss to Lynwood and a 15-6 loss to Sylmar.
