There’s no better example of a group of players continuing to work and believe after a poor start than the Venice High softball team.
The Gondoliers lost their first eight games of the season, then went undefeated in the Western League with a 10-0 record. The most recent win was a 13-0 shutout of Palisades.
The league champions coached by Mike Finegold have advanced into the LA City playoffs with a 12-9 overall record.
Sarina Dominguez is hitting .468, followed by Michelle Ayer at .444 and Danielle Mestas at .319.
Venice began the season by losing to Roosevelt, Crenshaw, Granada Hills, St. Monica twice, Narbonne, Kennedy and Bell. But it proved superior to every league opponent.
Palisades has a 7-10 record, including 4-6 in the Western League.
Santa Monica continued its highly successful season by edging South Torrance in a tournament game, 5-3. then routing Inglewood twice, 22-1 and 21-3. The Vikings have a 17-5 record and are 7-0 in the Ocean League. Hannah-Rose Peters has an 11-4 record and all-CIF catcher Christine Foley is hitting .583 with four home runs.
St. Monica lost to St. Paul, 14-3 and shut out Mary Star, 4-0 to even its season record at 10-10, including 2-5 in league play.
Crossroads defeated Calvary Chapel, 9-0 for its third win of the season against eight losses. The Roadrunners are 2-2 in the Alpha League.
New Roads extended its winning streak to 12 games with a 6-0 victory over Discovery Prep of Pacoima and a 15-0 win over Ribet Academy. The team is 15-3 overall, including 5-0 in the Harbor League.
Brentwood lost to Paraclete, 2-1 and defeated Windward, 11-1. The Eagles are 9-8 overall and 4-4 in the Delphic League.
Malibu split with Nordhoff, winning 6-5 and losing, 7-4. The Sharks are 9-11 overall but 0-6 in the Frontier League.
Boys
St. Monica has split its games this season – 10-10 overall and 5-5 in the Del Rey League. In the most recent games the Mariners defeated Serra, 13-3 and St. Bernard, 6-3.
Crossroads defeated Pacific Hills, 11-1. The Roadrunners are 9-4 overall, including 5-2 in the Delphic League.
New Roads had a 4-3 win over Community Charter. The Jaguars improved to 11-9, including 4-1 in the Harbor League. Adam Williams is batting .481 and Randall Irvin .439.
Brentwood split with LA Baptist, winning 3-0 and losing 8-1. The Eagles’ overall record is 10-12, including 3-5 in league play.
Malibu split with Nordhoff, losing 7-3 and winning 9-8 to become 9-11 for the season, including 4-5 in the Frontier League.
In the LA City Section, Venice lost to Westchester and Palisades, both by 10-0 scores. The Gondoliers are 8-15 overall, including 7-6 in the Western League.
In addition to its shutout of Venice, Palisades had a 10-0 win over Hamilton. The Dolphins are 16-10, including 11-2 in the Western League going into the playoffs.
