It was a great week for men’s volleyball as SAMOHI’s Vikings clinched the Bay League title with a perfect season of league play.

The Vikings concluded their season with a three-games-to-one match win over traditional powerhouse Palos Verdes High School. Samohi now advances to the first round of CIF playoffs, a sequel to last year’s run where they got to within one win of the CIF Southern Section Championship match. The CIF Southern Section is arguably the most competitive high school volleyball league in the nation, and a regular feeder to college contenders including both UCLA and Pepperdine.

Samohi head volleyball coach Liane Sato, an Olympic athlete who played on the U.S. National Team, leads both the Viking men’s and women’s squads and this is her fourth team in a row to advance to the playoffs. Prospects for the 2006 Viking men’s team are bright as four senior starters gained playoff experience last year including back row specialist Bronson Olivera, setter Fred McLafferty and hitters Neil Kline and Mike Campbell. Joining the squad this year is another senior, Alex Bon. Bon is a gifted front row hitter and blocker who is also a CIF Southern Section standout golfer doing double duty this spring for the Vikings playing both volleyball and golf.

The Vikings will host Round One of the playoffs at SAMOHI North Gym on Friday, May 12, 7pm against Oxnard’s Rio Mesa High School. The event is open to the public.

In other local volleyball news, UCLA’s men’s team defeated Penn State three game to zip for the NCAA championship.
