Lefthander Joe McGrew, who made all-CIF as a junior, pitched a four-hit shutout as Santa Monica High began its Ocean League baseball schedule with a 9-0 victory over Hawthorne Friday, March 30, at Samohi.
McGrew was in complete control. He struck out 10 batters and didn’t walk any.
Samohi also played a non-league game last week, losing to Kennedy High of Granada Hills, 6-2.

New Roads has a 4-2 record following a 4-1 loss to Brentwood and 9-0 win over Ribet Academy. Adam Williams is batting .429.
Brentwood has a 6-3 record, all in non-league play, following two victories, 15-5 over Viewpoint and 7-6 over Cabrillo.
The Eagles have a .363 team batting average led by Jeff Greschman at .416 and Mikey Wapnick at .400. Ryan Toomin is hitting .400 and has a 3-1 record as a pitcher.
Crossroads defeated Oakwood, 8-7, and has a 4-4 record.
Brentwood and Crossroads, both members of the Alpha League, will meet in a 7 p.m. game Friday, April 13, at Clover Park.
Palisades defeated Venice twice in Western League games, 1-0 and 16-1. The Dolphins have an 8-5 record, including 4-0 in league play.
Jack Richardson leads Venice in batting at .412 and has a 3-2 record as a pitcher. Mitch Takade is hitting .406. The Gondoliers are 6-5 overall, but only 1-3 in the league.
