SMC Women Lose Basketball Opener:

The Santa Monica College women’s basketball team lost its season opener, 76-59, to Santa Ana College Wednesday, November 7 before a capacity crowd at Corsair Pavilion.

Sophomore forward Zedra Slaton from Palisades High led the Corsairs with 21 points. Freshman guard Dakiya Covington from Michigan had 14.

The Corsairs’ other starters were Alicia Affinito from Reno, Irina Sharf from Fairfax High, and Jewell Morris from Venice High.

Jasmine English, who suffered a knee injury in a game two seasons ago, played briefly as a reserve.

SMC had a 30-29 lead, but the taller opponent moved to a 60-50 advantage and wasn’t challenged down the stretch.

Lydia Strong began her eighth season as the Corsairs’ coach.
