SMC Women To Begin Conference Play:

The Santa Monica College women’s basketball team will begin Western State Conference Southern Division play hopeful of improving on last season.

The 2006-07 team had an overall 15-16 record and was 5-7 in conference games.

The team’s star was Ashleigh Osborne, who made all-conference two times and earned a scholarship to Minot State College in North Dakota.

Returnees from that team are all-conference guard Zedra Slaton, Sevan Sherikan, and Ashley Abrahms. Jewell Morris from Venice High and Dakiya Covington are key additions.

Lydia Strong is in her eighth year as the team’s coach.

The Corsairs enter conference play following a trip to San Francisco, where they participated in the San Mateo Tournament.
