Samohi Holds Mock Election:

Students at Santa Monica High School participated in a MyVote California Student Mock General Election on October 30.

The 1,406 students who cast ballots had the opportunity to vote for president and on all the state ballot measures.

When it came to choosing our next president, 1,165 students (82.80 percent) voted for Democratic candidate Barack Obama, while 134 students (9.52 percent) voted for Republican candidate John McCain. The next biggest vote-getter was Peace and Freedom candidate Ralph Nader with 51 votes (3.62 percent). Green Party candidate Cynthia McKinney and Libertarian candidate Bob Barr were tied with 24 votes (1.71 percent), and the candidate who received the least number of votes was the American Independent candidate Alan Keyes who received 9 votes (0.64 percent).

The state ballot measure results are shown below.

Proposition 1A – High-Speed Train Bond – received 568 yes votes (58.14 percent) and 409 no votes (41.86 percent).

Proposition 2 – Treatment of Farm Animals – received 701 yes votes (72.87 percent) and 261 no votes (27.13 percent).

Proposition 3 – Children’s Hospital Bond – received 751 yes votes (79.14 percent) and 198 no votes (20.86 percent).

Proposition 4 – Minor’s Pregnancy – received 381 yes votes (37.28 percent) and 641 no votes (62.72 percent).

Proposition 5 – Nonviolent Offenders – received 546 yes votes (59.41 percent) and 373 no votes (40.59 percent).

Proposition 6 – Law Enforcement Funding – received 438 yes votes (48.67 percent) and 462 no votes (51.33 percent).

Proposition 7 – Renewable Energy – received 654 yes votes (72.51 percent) and 248 no votes (27.49 percent).

Proposition 8 – Same Sex Marriage – received 343 yes votes (30.09 percent) and 797 no votes (69.9 percent).

Proposition 9 – Victim’s Rights, Parole – received 494 yes votes (55.64 percent) and 393 no votes (44.36 percent).

Proposition 10 – Energy Bonds – received 627 yes votes (67.20 percent) and 306 no votes (32.80 percent).

Proposition 11 – Redistricting – received 403 yes votes (57.24 percent) and 301 no votes (42.76 percent).

Proposition 12 – Veteran’s Bond – received 580 yes votes (64.73 percent and 316 no votes (35.27 percent).
