Independent Spirit Awards Nominees:

A local fixture for years, the Independent Spirit Awards set themselves apart from year’s past, and decades apart from their big sister award show, the Oscars, when they nominated certifiable independents this year instead of the usual crossover fare.

Lance Hammer’s Ballast, a film about living on the Mississippi Delta, tied with Jonathan Demme’s Rachel Getting Married and Courtney Hunt’s Frozen River for the most nominated, with six nods each.

Notably absent was Gus Van Sant’s Milk for Feature, as well as Slumdog Millionaire, which seemed headed for the same fate as the other films pushed by Fox Searchlight the past two years, Little Miss Sunshine and Juno.

The Independent Spirit Awards will be held on February 21 in the big tent on the beach in Santa Monica. Below are the nominees in full.
