St. Monica (14-6) Eyes Playoff Berth:

The St. Monica boys basketball team won 18 games and qualified for the CIF playoffs last season.

Those are goals of Coach Tony Depa and the Mariners are on track to accomplish the same things this season.

St. Monica has a 14-6 record following a 63-47 win at Mary Star in the most recent game.

Forward Richard Gibson, who scored 23 points against Mary Star, averages 12.3. Ryan Capino averages 11.5 and senior James Ward 10.3.

St. Paul, which has nine returning seniors from a playoff team, leads the Camino Real League with a 4-0 record. La Salle is 3-1 and St. Monica 2-2.

Cantwell is also in contention for a playoff berth.

“I’m happy with the progress of our basketball program,” said Depa, who is in his fifth season.
