Girls Soccer Rolls on at Samohi:

It is mid-season for Samohi’s girls varsity soccer team and after a somewhat bumpy start, the team has hit stride and is 3-0 in Ocean League play. Prior to the league games, the Viking women faced some of Southern California’s toughest teams in warm-up “friendlies” including Notre Dame, Mira Costa and Peninsula. Overall, the team’s record to date is 7-8-3.

Two sophomores, Lizzy Lyons and Julia Glanz, lead the Viking attack up front. Glanz is the team’s leading scorer. Senior Monica Mirch anchors the Viking mid-field, and the Viking defense is lead by co-captain senior Sara Waters. Senior Emily Rodriguez has filled a number of positions as a utility player, and sophomore Nicole Littiere is the starting goal keeper.

Additional seniors on the team include Katy Fitzpatrick, Jennifer Garcia, and co-captains Melissa Sancez and Kristen Kearsley. Juniors include Justine De La Torre, Amanda Phillips, Gabie Levesque, Shannon Rock, and sweeper Hannah Minderhout. Sophomores Cheyanne Somo, Mikka Alemania, Brittany Garcia, Stephanie Becerra, Rachel Forer, Kate Quinones, and freshman Kristen Vazquez complete the 2009 Viking roster.

Serafin Rodriguez is Samohi’s Soccer Director and Daniel Islas is the girl’s varsity coach. The Lady Vikings have made the CIF playoffs each of the last six years, and in 2008 they advanced to the semi-finals only to lose in an overtime shoot-out.
