When Gregg Simmons came to Santa Monica College in January following the resignation of Rhonda Hyatt, he accepted the position of Interim Athletic Director.
It was announced that Simmons would hold the position until the end of June while a search would be conducted for a permanent replacement.
With the arrival of June comes the news that the Interim has been removed from Simmoms’ title.
Having the advantage of holding the job and being able to prove himself, Simmons did just that and SMC officials realized they had the best candidate already in place.
Simmons will be responsible for the direction of 16 SMC Intercollegiate athletic teams.
Simmons, who came to SMC from San Diego, has extensive knowledge of the bylaws and requirements of the California Community Colleges’ Commission on Athletics and the NCAA.
He received his B.S. degree in business management from Redlands and his master’s in education from with an emphasis in counseling from San Diego State. He is married with two children in college.
Simmons has more than 15 years of experience in coaching and athletic management. He was head track and cross country coach at San Diego City College and also coached at San Diego State and LA Southwest College, then was executive director of the San Diego sports Institute.
Simmons will reveal his vision for the SMC athletic department in an upcoming article.
