Incredible: Two 100-Yard Returns In Four Games:

St. Monica senior Danny White has returned interceptions for 100-yard touchdowns twice in the Mariners’ first four games this season.

“It would be remarkable if anyone did that twice in a season, but twice in four games is incredible,” said St. Monica coach Larry Muno.

“Both were similar,” said Muno. “There was a poor throw and Danny went up high to get the ball. He works hard and is in great condition and he’s pretty fast. So once he made the interceptions he was on his way.”

Muno describes White as having “in-game speed,” as opposed to players who can run fast but aren’t able to apply their speed to game conditions.

White is the son of Mariner baseball coach Jack White and has a brother playing baseball at West Los Angeles College.

My research has failed to produce anything similar to White’s accomplishment this season at any level of football.

It is one piece of the Mariners’ comeback story to being a respectable team with a 2-2 record after losing 37 of the last 38 games over four seasons.

St. Monica, which had a bye last weekend, will play a Santa Fe League game against Salesian Saturday night at Corsair Field, the team it defeated in the final game of the 2008 season to end a 37-game losing streak, the longest of any high school team in California.

“Danny is our best cornerback,” said Muno.

And what did White say about his interception returns?

“Not much,” said Muno. “He’s a nice kid, very humble.”
