St. Monica Ends With a Victory:

Larry Muno’s first season as the St. Monica football coach ended with a victory.

The Mariners went on the road and defeated Western Christian, 28-21 to conclude with three victories although none were accomplished in the Santa Fe League.

As a result of being 0-4 in league games St. Monica did not qualify for the CIF playoffs. However, winning three times was a big improvement over the previous for years, when the victory total was one — a conquest of Salesian in the final game of 2008.

“I’ll be back next season,” said Muno. “We have great kids here.”

Muno said it was a season-long process to find the right positions for players.

“We finally got it right,” he said, referring especially to moving Jack Porter and Kyle Schwan to the inside linebacker spots.

Muno said the possibility of playing Brentwood next season, which would be the school’s first meeting ever in varsity football, was still in the discussion stage. But he said the game would likely be played later in the season instead of in the opener, as was previously being considered.
