Samohi Girls Await Big Games:

This is shaping up as one of the most exciting and most memorable seasons in the history of Santa Monica High girls basketball.

A 59-51 victory over defending Ocean League champion Inglewood before a capacity crowd Friday night in the Samohi gym was just the beginning of a series of high-profile games.

Samohi was scheduled to host Beverly Hills Wednesday night. Last season a loss to Beverly Hills cost Samohi the league championship.

Then on Friday Samohi will travel to Culver City. The 6 p.m. game will be another league test against a quality opponent.

On January 30 Samohi will host Mater Dei, the nation’s No. 1-ranked team, in the concluding game of Coach Marty Verdugo’s ambitious one-day Extravaganza. The 8 p.m. game will be the final one of six matching Westside teams against out-of-area Southern California opponents.

Finally, there’ll be another league meeting with Inglewood on the Sentinels’ home court.
