Samohi’s Decker Starts Fast At Lake Elsinore:

Former Santa Monica High baseball star Cody Decker has started fast in his second professional season in the San Diego Padres organization.

Decker is the designated hitter for the Lake Elsinore Storm. He was hitting over .400 before a one-for-eight stretch brought him to .330 after the season’s first nine games.

“They have taller guys playing first base, but I’m getting my at-bats,” said Decker.

When Decker played for Samohi he weighed 190. Now he’s at 220.

“The Padres have an excellent weight training program,” he said.

Decker is built similar to Steve Garvey, who was also considered short for a first baseman but had a distinguished major league career.

“He’s my idol,” said Decker.

After being drafted in the 22nd round out of UCLA last season Decker became the Arizona League MVP with 14 home runs and 61 RBI.
