High school sports are into full swing this summer, and the Santa Monica girls volleyball team is gearing up for promising season. But first, they’ll take a little detour by way of Hawaii.
With tryouts wrapped up, coach Liane Sato said the team looks strong this year, and expects them to compete well all season.
The girls will take a team trip to Hawaii in mid-August for the Ann Kang Invitational tournament. Sato said the tournament is highly competitive and the girls have been preparing for the opponents they will face there as well as working hard to raise money for the trip.
In addition, the Vikings are scheduled to play in three tournaments during the season at North, Marlborough and Redondo.
During the summer, the players will work to compete for starting positions, and Sato said she sees strong leadership coming from her older players on what was, last year, a young team.
“We had a very young team last year. Now with one year under our belt we should do well,” Sato said.
