Despite multiple fumbles and penalties, St. Monica High School football team escaped with a 16-8 victory over visiting Bellarmine-Jefferson Saturday night at Corsair Field.
Safety Michael Doherty sealed the win for the Mariners with an interception of Bell-Jeff’s quarterback Michael Shirley pass in the Mariner end zone with under a minute left in the fourth quarter.
“I just read the pass, I guess,” Doherty unassumingly said after the time expired and his team celebrated victory.
The win moves the Mariners record to 5-3 (1-1 Santa Fe League). They will have starting QB Matt Partyka back next week against St. Genevieve.
