Santa Monica High School football team used a stifling defense and a pair of early touchdowns to roll over Morningside at Coleman Stadium Friday night, 27-0.
Picking up where he left off in the Beverly Hills game, running back Kori Garcia rushed for two touchdowns in the first quarter.
Quarterback Rhys Gervais put the Vikings up 20-0 with a touchdown on a 40-yard run in the second. In the third, Gervais was intercepted but the Monarchs couldn’t convert.
Christian Salem, third on the Samohi quarterback depth chart, was inserted into the game with just under 4 minutes left in the third quarter. Gervais’ back-up, senior Brock Miller, also saw playing time.
Head coach Travis Clark kept wide receiver Kris Comas out most of the game to avoid aggravating his groin pull. Garcia twisted his ankle in the fourth quarter, and was seen limping with an ice pack after the game. He said he will be ready for the home game against Culver City next week.
The Vikings are 4-4 (1-2 Ocean League) on the season and must win the remaining two games to make the plaoffs.
