An opening ceremony marking the establishment of Confucius Classrooms dedicated to the teaching of Mandarin and Chinese culture at three Los Angeles–area schools will be held at the UCLA campus on Monday.
The new Confucius Classrooms are at Broadway Elementary School in Venice, Los Angeles County High School for the Arts on the campus of California State University, Los Angeles, and Norton Space and Aeronautics Academy in San Bernardino.
The event is hosted by the UCLA Confucius Institute, which is developing language and cultural workshops and teacher training programs and organizing arts collaborations and visits between the three local schools and their “sister” schools in China.
The ceremony will include brief performances by students from the three Los Angeles–area schools.
The Confucius Classroom designations at the three schools — the first such designations in the Los Angeles area — are made by Hanban, the Chinese government office established to promote the teaching of Chinese around the world. The classrooms will receive support from Hanban and the UCLA Confucius Institute.
