Major League baseball veterans Kenny Lofton and Derrek Lee, Entertainment Tonight host Chris Jacobs and possibly Samohi alumnus Charlie Sheen and Los Angeles Angels’ outfielder Torii Hunter among others will head to the Moose Lodge on Saturday night for a Poker tournament and memorabilia auction. All proceeds will benefit the Samohi Viking baseball team.
“It was (Coach) Sheldon (Philip-Guide)’s idea to start the event,” said assistant coach Tony Todd. “The parents donate their time and set up the website and make the phone calls. I’m just the ‘go-getter’ who brings in friends who like to help.”
One of those friends is one of Todd’s best friends, Charlie Sheen, who donated $10,000 last year.
“Charlie got involved because he’s a Samohi alum. We’d ask for donations from people and he’d say ‘I’ll donate to the cause.’ He’s the one who helps us out the most.”
While the poker tournament is taking place, various items will be auctioned, including a jersey signed by Hunter, seats against the glass to a Kings’ game and even a bracelet from Tiffany’s.
This event begins at 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Moose Lodge, 1600 Ocean Park Blvd.
