Bru’s Wiffle: A Waffle Joint On Wilshire Boulevard:

Tired of Googling “places for breakfast in Santa Monica?” Annoyed by the weekend brunch lines? Try Bru’s Wiffle, quite possibly the best place to eat dessert for breakfast or have breakfast for dinner.

Want a “Chocolate Waffle Party” (butter cream, Oreos, whipped cream, and chocolate sauce sandwiched between two waffles) at 9 a.m. or Breakfast Waffle Sliders for lunch? This is the place.

Always ask about the specials and trust the weird sounding combinations like “The King,” which boasts a waffle adorned in peanut butter, banana, and bacon.

Squashed on the 2400 block of Wilshire (across from California Chicken Cafe), while I can’t promise ample parking, I can attest to a bright and airy “french country” vibe where you can get eggs and bacon anytime of day, a panini or soup/salad if you want a sturdy lunch, or a blueberry waffle topped with ice cream for dinner if you wish a whimsical evening.

If you are of the “salty-sweet” variety, try Dwight’s Special Fried Chicken & Waffle. Sound familiar? It should (think: Roscoe’s but without the commute).

As one who gets fried chicken for the sole purpose of eating the crispy skin, I was thrilled to find the outside of two tender chicken breasts thoroughly fried in a nice jacket of spiced skin that slid right off the flesh (should you be one who just wants to eat the meat). The waffle was equally as delicious, and when smothered in butter and real maple syrup, became the vehicle for a southern delight.

For those who prefer something more “traditional” for breakfast, consider the Waffle Scrambles. Topped with scrambled eggs, you can decide how badly you want to ruin your New Year’s diet by selecting toppings from the A.M. Protein (chicken, cheese, mushrooms, and onion), the Aloha (pineapple and bacon), to the Morning Chili (spicy beef chili and cheese), and the Say What? (bacon, grapes, and goat cheese).

No matter who you are (and no matter what time of day), make sure to try one of the sugared dessert waffles. Starting at Mini Chocolate (dusted with powdered sugar and syrup) and growing to the Original topped with your own selection from the sweet shop (sprinkles and nutella? Whip cream and chocolate chips? Coffee and cookies ice cream?), even the fullest will find room to lick their plates.

While I have yet to venture into the assortment of “non-waffle” offerings such as the soups, salads, and sandwiches, like a true Santa Monican I will certainly return for brunch, lunch, or dinner (whichever comes first). I can’t wait to try Bru’s Burger (bacon, fried egg, onion, avocado, tomato and garlic aioli on a brioche bun) which sounds good enough to rival the best of them.
