Santa Monica Business Embraces Green Burial Practices:

Santa Monica-based Gates, Kingsley and Gates Moeller Murphy Funeral Directors, a Dignity Memorial provider, has announced it is offering eco-friendly wicker caskets.

The Arizona Ave. organization said these caskets were “designed to be part of a life celebration that brings comfort while aligning with an individual’s or a family’s values.”

Jeffrey Baker, general manager of Gates, Kingsley and Gates Moeller Murphy Funeral Directors, said this represented the next step in its commitment to embracing green burial practices in a way of caring for the departed with minimal environmental impact.

“Santa Monica has always been on the forefront of environmental initiatives, and as such, has attracted a community of like-minded individuals and families who are committed to protecting and preserving our world for future generations,” Baker said. “This commitment extends to virtually every aspect of a person’s life, including their final life celebrations. As an integral part of the community for more than 80 years, we are committed to providing environmentally-friendly, innovative options when it comes to honor an individual’s final wishes.”

Gates, Kingsley and Gates Moeller Murphy Funeral Directors’ eco-friendly caskets are crafted by skilled weavers at a small cottage industry in New Mexico that has been approved by Green America as a socially and environmentally responsible business. They are created from sustainable materials such as fast-growing willow, sea grass, and bamboo, which don’t require heavy machinery for harvesting, giving them a small carbon footprint. The linings are made from unbleached natural cotton.

The caskets are approved by the Green Burial Council, an organization working to make burial more meaningful, simple, and sustainable.
