Dumpster Diver Arrested After Kicking Santa Monica Police Officer In The Leg: Alert Police Blotter: Re-Recycling.

A man caught removing recyclable items from a city trash bin behind Parking Structure Four on Sept. 2 ended up behind bars after he failed to cooperate with police and tried to fight them.

At 5:20 p.m. officers of the Santa Monica Police Department went to the rear of the structure at 1321 2nd Street after they had received a report of a man who was removing items from the trash bin. This is a blatant violation of a Santa Monica City Municipal Code.

When the officers arrived at the scene they met with the “whistle blower” in this case who is employed by the City of Santa Monica as a Downtown Service Officer.

She told the police that she had personally witnessed the crime.

The officers then spoke with the suspect who was not cooperative with them.

This man also refused to provide any identification papers.

The officers decided to arrest this man and as they were putting him in the back of the police vehicle he kicked out at an officer, striking the officer in the lower leg.

This man resisted being put in the vehicle with such earnestness that additional officers were required to quell his rebellious behavior.

This man was eventually taken off to jail where he was charged with battery on a police officer, resisting officers, removing recyclables from containers, and a parole violation.

No bail was granted.

Editor’s Note: These reports are part of a regular police coverage series entitled “Alert Police Blotter” (APB), which injects some minor editorial into certain police activities in Santa Monica. Not all of the Mirror’s coverage of incidents involving police are portrayed in this manner. More serious crimes and police-related activities are regularly reported without editorial in the pages of the Santa Monica Mirror and its website, smmirror.com.
