Peace group CODEPINK will host a dance procession from Santa Monica to Venice today, Feb. 14 in support of the One Billion Rising campaign.
One Billion Rising is a global movement started by author and activist, Eve Ensler, to end violence against women and girls across the globe.
From noon to 2 pm, participants will meet at Santa Monica Promenade (Broadway and 3rd) and dance along the Promenade to 3rd and Arizona, then return to 3rd and Broadway, dance down Main Street to Abbott Kinney, west on Venice to the Venice Circle at Windward and Pacific for the final flash mob of Break the Chains.
Jodie Evans, co-founder of CODEPINK, said it is time to be in the streets.
“The violence against women must end,” Evans said. “We all must stand together to make it happen.”
Evans said one in three women will be raped or assaulted in their lifetimes, and with six billion people on the planet, that makes one billion women.
She said the goal of today’s event is for one billion women and the men who love them to rise up and dance all over the world.
