Saint John’s To Present Free Annual Community Cancer Forum June 11, 12:

Saint John’s Health Center will present its 3rd Annual Community Cancer Forum titled “Your Health and Cancer: The Immune System and Genetics in Cancer Prevention and Treatment” on Tuesday, June 11.

It will be held from from 2-4 pm and repeated on Wednesday, June 12 from 6:30-8:30 pm.

Both forums are open to the public with advance reservations and will be held at the Santa Monica Public Library Auditorium at 601 Santa Monica Boulevard.

At this free community education forum, renowned surgeons, clinical and research experts of the John Wayne Cancer Institute at Saint John’s will discuss: how the immune system can protect us against cancer; the role of genetics, family history and heredity in cancer; and how immunotherapy is proving to be an effective line of treatment for certain cancers.

A question and answer session will be held after the lecture.

Featured speakers include:

— “Your Immune System in Health and Cancer—Including Prevention and Treatment of Melanoma” by Delphine J. Lee, MD, PhD, FAAD, dermatologist and the Director of Translational Immunology Department at the Dirks/Dougherty Laboratory for Cancer Research

— “Family History, Heredity, Genetics/Genomics in Cancer—Including Breast Cancer Risk and Prevention” by Maureen Chung, MD, PhD, FACS, breast surgical oncologist, Director of the Margie Petersen Breast Center and Director of the Margie and Robert E. Petersen Breast Cancer Research Program

— “The Prevention of Colon Cancer: The Role of Diet, Stress and Lifestyle” by Anton J. Bilchik, MD, PhD, FACS, surgical oncologist, Professor of Surgery and Chief of Medicine

— “The Importance of Genetics and the Immune System in Brain Tumor Treatment” by Daniel F. Kelly, MD, neurosurgeon and Director of Saint John’s Brain Tumor Center and Pituitary Disorders Program.

Lisa Chaiken, MD, radiation oncologist and Cancer Liaison Physician with the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, will moderate the Tuesday afternoon program. Marilou Terpenning, MD, FACP, medical oncologist and Chair of Saint John’s Cancer Committee will moderate the Wednesday evening program.
