Santa Monica police arrested a 41-year-old Los Angeles man for public intoxication on Wednesday, June 26, but he had to be tasered to be restrained.
At 3:28 pm an officer of the Santa Monica Police Department was called out to the Vons Market at 710 Broadway in order to investigate a man who was intoxicated and causing trouble.
When the officer arrived he was directed towards a man who was sitting on the curb.
The officer spoke to the man and noticed the suspect did not understand anything that was being said due to his high state of intoxication (the man on the curb, not the officer).
The officer then asked the man to turn around so that handcuffs could be applied to him, and the man seemed to be cognizant of what was going on at that time because he suddenly became tense and attempted to pull away from the officer.
The officer took this man down, but the man continued to resist and made several unsuccessful attempts to punch the officer in the face.
The officer used more force in order to restrain this man but it had little effect, so the officer deployed his X26 Taser in order to force compliance.
This was a success and the man was arrested.
As a matter of precaution the man was taken to a local hospital so he could be examined and have some minor injuries attended to.
The medical staff then cleared him for booking and he was taken off to jail.
This LA resident was charged with battery upon a police officer, obstructing an officer, and public intoxication.
Bail was set at $20,000.
