Santa Monica Police Arrest Carjacking Suspect: Alert Police Blotter: Is This The Way To Montebello?

A 20-year-old man was arrested Thursday, Sept. 5 in Montebello and transported to the Santa Monica Police Department to face charges relating to a carjacking at a Santa Monica beach parking lot.

This story began back on Monday, Aug. 26, when, at 9:30 pm officers of the Santa Monica Police Department were called out to the parking lot in the 1100 block of the Pacific Coast Highway in order to investigate a carjacking.

When they arrived the officers spoke with the two victims who told them that they had been visiting the Santa Monica Pier and were walking back to their vehicle when two men approached them.

One of the men had produced a handgun and demanded money.

The two men then took the cellphone and the keys to the victims’ vehicle and fled in the vehicle headed southbound on the Pacific Coast Highway. The officers took a report.

On Thursday, Sept. 5, at 6:30 am officers of the Santa Monica Police Department went to Montebello and met Montebello Police Department officers, who told them that they had recovered the stolen vehicle in the 100 block of Third Street in Montebello.

They added they had apprehended the suspect who had been driving the vehicle after a short foot chase, and that this suspect was in custody.

The Santa Monica officers brought this man back to Santa Monica where he was charged with carjacking and grand theft auto.

Bail was set at $100,000.

Editor’s Note: These reports are part of a regular police coverage series entitled “Alert Police Blotter” (APB), which injects some minor editorial into certain police activities in Santa Monica. Not all of the Mirror’s coverage of incidents involving police are portrayed in this manner. More serious crimes and police-related activities are regularly reported without editorial in the pages of the Santa Monica Mirror and its website, smmirror.com.
