Dear Editor:
It’s during difficult moments that we as a community should come together to support our young people. It’s with a heavy heart that I reach out to you all and ask that you kindly make a donation of any amount to help out Crystyan Fernandez who’s enrolled at Santa Monica College.
His mother was killed in a fatal hit-and-run in the City of Inglewood on Saturday October 19. After extensive media coverage, the suspect, ultimately turned himself.
Crystyan’s mom was a single mother who worked as a housekeeper in Santa Monica. He’s also an only child. More than often, working class students have to deal with all sorts of trauma, with very limited emotional, financial, and psychological support to move forward. It’s also important to note that working class families highly value education, and Crystyan is determined to complete his education.
Moreover, a basic funeral will cost between $18K and $20K. Where does a 22 year old kid come up with that kind of money? Below is the link to his fundraising page. This is the least I can do for him; after all he’s one of my students.
Thank you!
