The St. Monica girls’ basketball team has been on a roll lately. That’s a good thing for the Mariners and their head coach Kelly Evans. After rolling out three straight wins at the South East Winter Classic, the Mariners went out and defeated four tough opponents at the St. Monica Classic Tournament.
The Mariners next game will be against View Park this Saturday. St. Monica will then take off the rest of the holiday season before they open up Camino Real League play against Flintridge Sacred Heart on Jan. 7.
If the Mariners keep up their momentum going into league play, the rest of the teams will be in trouble. Junior Liyah Lewis scored 21 points to help lead the Mariners past Crossroads in the first game of the tournament, which St. Monica prevailed 49-42.
The Mariners then eked out a 60-58 win against Notre Dame Academy, thanks to the play of Katrina Balatico. Balatico scored 16 points in the contest, while Molly Tomlin and Lewis added 14. Tomlin had a team-high 14 points in leading St. Monica past Cleveland for a 38-33 victory.
St. Monica had a much easier time in the tournament final, whipping Marymount 38-15. Tomlin, again, was the high scorer for the Mariners, dropping in 15 points in the win. Balatico added 13 points.
