Postseason Run Ends for Boys and Girls Basketball at Pacifica Christian: Seawolves make noise in playoffs before being ousted

It was a great run for both the boys and girls basketball teams from Pacifica Christian. Too bad it all had to come to an abrupt end. Both teams enjoyed partial success in the postseason but came short of their ultimate goal of competing for a CIF title.

The Pacifica Christian boys’ basketball team probably enjoyed the most fun during their tournament run, getting all the way to within one game of playing for the CIF championship. The Seawolves took out Nuview (46-42) in the first round, defeated Pasadena Polytechnic (52-48) in the second round before pulling off a huge upset in beating Brethern Christian (67-64) in a quarterfinal game.

The Seawolves’ season ended Saturday, March 1, in a 101-44 semifinal defeat to San Gabriel Academy. To get this far in the tournament was a huge undertaking by the Seawolves since they finished fifth in the Liberty League and was clearly the underdog in each of the games they played in the postseason.

In defeating Brethern Christian, one of the top teams in the CIF-Southern Section Division 5AA section, Pacifica Christian took control of the game in the second and third quarters by outscoring the Warriors in the middle periods.

Brethern Christian (24-5) was the No. 3 team in the playoffs, while Pacifica Christian (12-14) was ranked No. 11. Against San Gabriel Academy, the Seawolves fell behind 24-6 after the first quarter then had to see the Eagles go on a 33-20 second quarter blitz to put the game away.

As far as the Pacifica Christian girls’ basketball team, the Seawolves fell to St. Piux X-St. Matthias Academy in the CIF-Southern Section Division 5A quarterfinal game. Pacifica Christian, which entered the tournament as the No. 4 team, was outscored by the Warriors (No.5) in all four quarters.

The Warriors (17-12) emphatically put the game away in the fourth period when they outpointed the Seawolves, 20-12. Pacifica Christian (17-8) came out on the losing end to the Warriors, losing 45-36.
