Earth Day Celebration

To honor Earth Day, local environmental group Heal the Bay hosts a Saturday full of eco-friendly and family-friendly activities on the shoreline, including a designer sandcastle competition, massive beach cleanup and free admission to Heal the Bay’s Santa Monica Pier Aquarium for those who volunteer.
Thousands of locals will take advantage of predicted sunny weather to help remove debris along Santa Monica beach.
Afterward, they can tour the creative sandcastles fashioned by such leading architecture and design firms as HOK and Gensler, and even build their own at a family zone sponsored by Time Warner Cable’s Connect A Million Minds initiative.
The event will take place from 9 am to 5 pm.
Schedule:
— Designer Sandcastle competition, 9 am – 12:30 pm, north of the Pier. Family castle-building takes place noon to 2 pm.
— Nothin’ But Sand Cleanup, 10 am to noon Volunteers can still join and bring their own buckets and gloves to support the Zero Waste effort. Northside of the pier.
— Open House at Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, noon to 5 pm. Cleanup volunteers will receive free admission Saturday to the Aquarium, which will be a hub of activities for kids and grownups. 1600 Ocean Front Walk, beach level, beneath the historic Carousel.
The event will feature a beach cleanup, sandcastle contests, and special Aquarium activities.
